JIS SCREWDRIVERS FOR JAPANESE BIKES

JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standards and they introduced their own standard design of crosshead screw head in the 1960’s. Given a quick glance, JIS screws are easily mistaken for Phillips crosshead design, but they are not the same and not interchangeable.

The Phillips format is designed to ‘cam-out’ so the driver disengages from the screw when tight, in order to prevent overtightening the thread and snapping the head off. However, the JIS system is designed not to ‘cam-out’. The geometry and the shape of Phillips and JIS fixings and drivers are different, meaning that using a common Phillips driver on a JIS can lead to damage to the head and the driver slipping. And once the screw is damaged, it’s even more difficult to remove.

JIS screws are usually marked with a dot (or sometimes a ‘+’ or ‘†’) on the head and commonly fitted on Japanese bikes on such areas brake reservoirs, brackets & carburettors. It’s good practice to check the screw before using a Phillips driver and have the right JMP JIS screwdriver to hand when you need it.
